One More Redeemer quilt for February 1, 2009
Here is a picture, taken by Rose, of our One More Redeemer quilt for this week's Celebration of New Lives ceremony. The ceremony is at the 4:30 service, but it will hang in the sanctuary all day. Sue Stein donated the top and Martha quilted and finished it.

Regular Meeting February 10, 2009
Note from Michelle: I hope that if you want to attend that you have already contacted Kathie. I am posting this (a bit late) so that the details and directions are available to us all online. I believe the plan for dinner is to meet at The Black Sheep Cafe. If you click the link and go to their web site, you can get directions and look at their menu. Be aware that they serve a selection of the dishes each day, not all of them. Last year I had a mushroom brie soup that I still wish I had a recipe for!
Now - here is Kathie's message:
Hi, Evergreen Quilters!
At our meeting last Tuesday, the fifteen of us who were there decided we'd have an outing for our February meeting. Here are the details: The Dakota County Star Quilters has their annual meeting with a speaker on the second Tuesday (Feb. 10th) at 7 pm and a quilt show of 100+ quilts. Speaker Lori Allison, a Minnetonka quilter, long-arm quilter, teacher, and pattern designer, will do a trunk show along with her talk. (See their web site at www.dakotacountystarquilters.org, click on "Quilt Show Information" or on the button within the paragraph about the upcoming Quilt show and annual meeting).
For the past couple of years several of us have attended this meeting and have seen the show--and both have been great! It's a great booster when spirits lag in mid-winter. The quilts are top notch and the talk has always been good.
So, who wants to go this year? Tickets for the Feb. 10th 7 pm meeting are $4 ($3 of that is a donation to the Historical Society Museum). I'll order tickets for anyone who wants to go. Just e-mail me this week to say "YES!" You can pay me for your ticket when I see you next.
Directions for getting there are easy or people might want to carpool: Dakota County Historical Society Museum: 130 3rd Avenue North, South St. Paul. Museum phone number: 651-552-7548. Take I-94 to Concord Street. Go north on Concord Street to Grand Avenue (the stoplight by Burger King). Turn left on Grand Avenue, go up the hill and turn to the left on 3rd Avenue. The Dakota County Historical Society Museum is on the left across the street from the South St. Paul City Hall.
Some have met beforehand for a light supper at a nearby restaurant. We'll be talking more about that closer to Feb. 10th.
Meanwhile, please e-mail me as soon as possible if you want me to buy you a ticket @ $4 for the event.
Best wishes,
Kathie

Minnesota Quilters 2009 scholarship for begining quilters
I know a few in our group might meet the criteria for the scholarship to attend (with huge benefits) the Minnesota Quilters annual meeting in June. I'm sending this out to the list and will let you decide if you're eligible. If you are eligible, I urge you to apply for the scholarship that gives a new quilter the opportunity to attend (free for most of it) an incredible experience!! See what you think. And if this doesn't apply to you, but you know a new quilter, please pass the information along to them. Thanks!
Best wishes,
Kathie

Block Club January 24, 2009
EDIT: instructions removed. Please contact Michelle or Kathie if you would like them!
From Michelle: Sorry I didn't post the earlier message sooner... here is info on the meeting tomorrow.
From Kathie:
Hi, Evergreen Quilters,
This week has crept up on me! Tomorrow morning (Saturday the 24th) at
10 am we'll meet together for the Evergreen Quilters Block Club. We'll
be in the basement room called the Spirit Play Room instead of the library.
Bring:
> Sharp scissors and pins!
> Show and Tell
> Announcements
> $4 for your ticket to the Dakota County Star Quilters show on Feb.
10th--I've got Jen, Peggy, Kate, Melissa, Michelle, Leah, Georgie, Rose,
and me on my list of those I know who are going. I'll take more names
on Saturday and will phone in our ticket request on Monday. $4 buys the
ticket for the quilt show (100 quilts) and the 7 pm lecture/trunk show
by Lori Allison.
> Round Robin Pizza Boxes to exchange--the final exchange and catch-up time
> Your tessellated pinwheel grid with border attached
> Did I say sharp scissors and pins?!!!!! If you're going to
participate in the lesson on tessellated pinwheels be sure to bring
sharp scissors and pins. Also bring any of the items below that are
easy for you*. We'll share whatever sewing machines, irons, and cutting
boards that show up. Bring yours if it's not a burden. But it's
important to have lots of sharp scissors. You'll want your own. I'll
bring the template plastic.
See you tomorrow. It's going to be very very very cold again, I'm sorry
to say. But we'll be warmed by each other's company and our common project!
Best,
Kathie
Please bring:
* a fabric grid constructed according to the instructions given
* Sharp scissors
* pins
* a quilter's pencil or regular pencil, sharpened
a 12" regular ruler or quilters' ruler (optional, but really helpful if
we have several)
cutting board or tray or cardboard about the size of your fabric grid
(optional)
sewing machine (optional) I'll bring mine (and maybe two). It would
help to have at least one more, probably.
We’ll have an iron and ironing board, and I'll bring my iron and a
pressing sheet .
I’ll bring template plastic and masking tape.

This post is for all of you that have subscribed somehow... I will send out an e-mail telling you that it has been posted. If you have subscribed via e-mail, then you should receive an e-mail announcing that there is a new post on the web site. If you subscribed to another feed, then you should see it there.

Blogging 101
There have been several questions about using the new blog. I decided to answer them all here so that we can all see all the questions and answers. I will add new Q&A as things come up that seem pertinent to several of us.
- What is a blog and why are we using one? Blog is a weird word abbreviated from "web log." Usually one person with a particular interest posts notes or articles on a topic and others can respond. Using a blog will 1) allow you to access ALL the info, conversations, photos, etc we post in one place without ever worrying about saving e-mails 2) allow you to access this info from any computer with internet access (IE, work, the library, a cabin on the lake); 3) allow any new member to immediately catch up on as much history as they would like; 4) allow us all to communicate with the entire group without adding or updating each others' e-mail addresses to our address books.
- Subscribing looks complicated... how do I decide how to subscribe?!? I recommend that, being new to blogs, you just subscribe via e-mail. If you start on the main page and click on the link to a post (which gets you to the "detail" page for the post), then scroll down and look near the comments box, there is a button to click to subscribe via e-mail. There is a "Subscribe" button at the top of the pages, but you can only choose to subscribe via feeds there.
- What is a feed? A feed is a service or conduit that sends notices of updates/posts to blogs you like to a place of your choosing, like a Google or Yahoo homepage... if you don't have a place like these that you already go to every day or so, then it just makes sense to use a place that you already go to regularly: your e-mail box! You know how you used to be able to get a special box next to your mailbox for your newspaper? A feed is like that box, only you choose what type of news goes into it and where the box sits. That box is NOT your e-mail box... if you want e-mail notifications, please subscribe via e-mail (see 2). Here is the answer from a pro.
- What does it mean to "follow" a blog? Following the blog means that you have added it to a list of the blogs you read on your Blogger "dashboard" or home page. If you choose to follow publicly, your name and icon will show up on the main page of each blog you follow. This is not the same as subscribing to the blog via e-mail or feed. Click here for more detail.
- How do I add a comment? First, you have to be on the Detail page for the post you want to reply to. If you are on the main page, which has all the posts from the last 14 days on it, then click on the name of the post you want to reply to. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the Post a Comment box. Type your reply in the box. Then next to Comment As, you have to choose an identity. If you do not already have one set up and you don't want to, choose Anonymous and make sure your name is in the comment box so we know who made your comment.
- How do I start a new post or thread? Right now you cannot do this directly. If you have a topic to post, send me your message and I will post it for you. If you think you will need to post frequently, like Kathie with meeting notes and reminders, let me know... I can set up a small number of people with rights.
First Post!!
Here it is... a blog for our little quilting group.
For those of you new to blogs, here is how this works. The page you first come to (where you are now) is the "main" page and shows the MOST RECENT posts or "articles." If you want to add a comment, you have to click on the title of the post or on the comments link at the bottom; this will take you to the page with all the details for that individual post. There will be a box at the bottom where you can type your comments. You can choose to use an identity that you have set up with Blogger, OpenID, or a few other common communities, or you can post anonymously. If you post comments anonymously PLEASE add your name to the end so that the rest of us know who said what.
Posts older than 14 days are stored in the Archives by month. Click on the month you want to look through and you will see the names of the articles posted in that month. Click on a name to view the post and all responses to it.
I suggest that everyone subscribe to the blog in whatever way they prefer, so that you will know when there is a new post. Look to the right for the subscription boxes. You can subscribe by e-mail or use whatever feed type you like (if you don't know what a feed is, don't worry... just subscribe for e-mail notification of new posts). You can always just bookmark the page and check for updates, but I think it's nice to get a notice when a new post is published.
The information posted on the blog will not disappear, so you don't have to worry about where that e-mail with addresses, project supplies, or directions went. There will be a photo gallery (soon, I hope). I hope to set up a small calender that will show meeting dates. I think that Kathie might want to be set up with rights to publish new posts so she can put meeting reminders and notes up for us.
If you have questions about how any of this works, how to set things up, or ideas for improvements, please let me know and I will help you out. I think this will be a valuable tool for us to stay in touch with each other and with our supporters.
